After long and struggling hours of working, even the most hardworking employee in the organization would love to have a small break. Whether a firm is big or small, the managers must initiate recess for their workers to refresh their minds because an organization lacking management skills can leave a negative impact on the firm’s productivity.

So, being a part of a good and reputed firm, impose Employee Break Policy on your workers to make them understand everything about the same. As employees can't sit continuously for 6-8 hours without a break, management should introduce short breaks for refreshments.

Because in a recent survey, we found that the employees taking small breaks during long working hour sessions, work more productively than others.

WHAT IS EMPLOYEE BREAK POLICY?

The process starts with the management deciding the amount and duration of breaks each employee can take without decreasing the productivity rate

Breaks are the most essential and mandatory requirement of an employee, which the firms must take seriously. In general, a staff working for 6 hours should take a break of a minimum of 20 minutes, and there should be no interruption for the same. Besides, if an employee takes more number of refreshments as decided and for longer durations, the management should impose strict actions against him/her.

HOW LONG SHOULD IT BE?

It depends upon the firm to decide the duration of breaks as per their working hours. Not only this, but they need to set the time correctly and fair for the workers. On average, for 6-8 working hours, 20-30 minutes of break time is enough. For workers doing extra, double, or multiple shifts, the duration can increase for avoiding fatigueness of the employees.

AT WHAT INTERVALS THE EMPLOYEES MAY TAKE BREAKS?

Working on repetitive tasks for a long time may be irritating for the workers. As a result, the employees won't be able to work accurately and may make mistakes due to mental fatigue, which will result in a decrease in productivity that is a breach of firms' policy. To overcome mental and physical exhaustion from work, firms decided to introduce an Employee Break Policy for their worker's mental and physical relaxation. So, it's better to take a 10 minutes break every 3-4 hours to refresh and relax your mind.

KINDS OF BREAKS:

Numerous kinds of breaks are there in the corporate world. Let's discuss some of them to understand them better:

  • REST BREAKS:

Companies having a work schedule of 8 hours per day should have a rest break of 5-20 minutes that can be allowed every 4 hours divided into 2 shifts, i.e., 10 AM-2 PM and 3 PM-8 PM. Not only this, but employers must keep an eye on their employees by maintaining records of the number of breaks taken and for the amount of duration.

  • MEAL BREAKS:

When the employees are working for 6 hours or more, they require meal breaks for 30 minutes to an hour, and it must not include in the productivity hours. Having good meals will motivate your employees to work more productively and energetically. Hence, every big or small must introduce meal breaks.

  • RESTROOM BREAKS:

No firm can impose a ban on nature calls. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Regulation, no firm can risk the health of their employees. Every worker must have access to restroom facilities at their workplace. Restricting employees for such emergencies may leave a negative impact on them and will affect productivity.

  • HEALTH HAZARDS:

To ensure 100% safety of employees' health, if a worker requires a regular interval of breaks due to medical issues, he/she should be free to take small refreshments.

  • SMOKE BREAKS:

Many employees have a habit of smoking, which can't be changed. It becomes difficult for them to control their urge to smoke, and so the firms should allow a 10-min break along with some strict rules to avoid unnecessary smoke breaks.

HOW SHOULD THE EMPLOYEE BREAK POLICY IMPLEMENT?

The management should implement such a policy by mentioning about the same on the day of employees' joining. Make them understand the rules and regulations and the result for breaking the rules. In this way, the workers will respect the policy and work accordingly.
